Ichibata Yakushi is an ancient temple of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, and is the head temple of the Yakushi faith, which is worshipped nationwide as the Yakushi of the Eyes. Founded in 894 during the Heian period, it is located on top of Mt. Ichibata in the center of the Shimane Peninsula, and is characterized by over 1,300 stone steps. The principal image is Yakushi Nyorai, which was pulled out of the sea by a fisherman, and is widely worshipped as a Buddha who prays for the health of eyes and the growth of children. It also flourished as a place of prayer for successive feudal lords, and is still bustling with many worshippers today.
