In the Izumo region, many Izumo myths, including the Kojiki and Nihonshoki, have been handed down.
On the other hand, kagura, which had been handed down since ancient times as a Shinto ritual performed only by priests, was participated in by the populace in the Edo period (1603-1867), and developed into a mythological drama with masks based on Izumo mythology and other themes, adding an aspect of entertainment. Izumo Kagura has passed down through the ages, and its techniques and spirit have been handed down to the present day.
In the mythical age of long ago, Amaterasu Omikami, the kami deity of the sun, hid herself away in Ama-no-Iwato, and the world was plagued by darkness and many disasters occurred.
When everyone was in trouble, Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto succeeded in bringing Amaterasu Omikami out through a funny dance in front of Iwato, and the world is said to have become bright again.
-Dancing to entertain the kami deities...
This is said to be the origin of kagura.
In the regular Izumo Kagura performances, two kagura troupes from Izumo City each perform about two acts on the stage of "Hishizumi-no-Miya" of the Hinomisaki Jinja Shrine, which is dedicated to Amaterasu Omikami, the main enshrined kami deity.
