Izumo Kagura
In the mythical age of long ago, the kami deity of the sun, Amaterasu Omikami, hid herself away in the cave called Ama-no-Iwato, causing the world to be plagued by darkness and disasters.
To bring the calamity to an end, the kami deity Ame-no-Uzume-no-mikoto entertained the other kami deities with a dance so entertaining that it brought a curious Amaterasu Omikami out out of hiding, and the world is said to have become bright again.
Dancing to entertain the kami deities...
This is said to be the origin of kagura.
In the Izumo region, many myths, including those collected in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki, have been handed down for over 1,300 years.
On the other hand, kagura, which had been handed down since ancient times as a Shinto ritual performed only by priests, was wasn't accessible by the populace until the Edo period (1603-1867) when it developed into a mythological drama with masks based on Izumo mythology and other themes. With the addition of the element of entertainment, Izumo Kagura has passed down through the ages, and its techniques and spirit have been handed down to the present day.
At this event, you can enjoy traditional Izumo Kagura.
